On censorship by distraction

In dictatorships, the word is “shut up”. In democracies, it is “ok, whatever”. It is a famous joke, which the digital context brings to a new perspective.

Information has no effect if there is no attention in front. When information is scarce and attention abundant, it is easier to control the dissemination of information. When information is overwhelming, trying to remove it draws attention. It is then much more effective to produce “noise” in order to distract attention from annoying information.
